A computer virus is a piece of software designed to complete a malicious task. For example, a computer virus may slow your computer, delete or modify your files, disable your disk drives, prevent you from accessing your antivirus programs, flood your computer with error messages, distort your operating system menus and cause your computer to crash. Fortunately, there are free online resources available to help you clean computer viruses from your computer, reports Microsoft Support.
Instructions
Automatic Removal
Open your antivirus program. If you do not have an antivirus program, consider downloading a free antivirus program, such as Windows Defender or AVG or Avast (linked in Resources below).
Update your antivirus program. Out-of-date antivirus programs cannot detect and delete new viruses. If you do not know how to update your antivirus program, consult the manufacturer's homepage.
Run a full scan of your computer using your antivirus program. Most antivirus programs give you the option of running a full scan or a quick scan. A full scan searches your entire computer for viruses. A quick scan covers only the areas where viruses are most commonly found. Running a full scan of your computer using an up-to-date antivirus program should remove the virus from your computer. If it does not, you will have to remove the virus manually.
