Fake antivirus or more precise - fake antimalware, or rogue security programs - is a generic description for all types of malware that pretend to be protection software against virus, spyware, Trojans and other types of malware. In reality however, fake antimalware is malicious software. The most used spreading mechanism is drive-by infections from visiting web sites.

One popular technique is to manipulate search engines to display search engine results using search words that are "hot" to display web sites that are infected by fake antimalware. Such words are f.ex. big media events and other issues that people usually search for. Another technique is propagation through malicious advertisements.

The idea behind Fake Antivirus is to trick infected users into purchasing the fake antivirus product by displaying information that the computer is infected even if it is not. Clean “Here you have” Email Virus

US-CERT have issued alerts of a worm spreading through email with the subject "Here you have" and being identified as the W32/VBMania@mm or “VBMania” worm. The virus has been spreading primarily via email, asking recipients to click on a link masked as a PDF file that actually links to malware being hosted on an external server. In a sample, an emailed contained a link to “PDF_Document21_025542010_pdf.scr’” which directed users to malware hosted on the domain “members.multimania.co.uk”. The virus had been spreading rapidly but researchers are saying that volume has dropped significantly once the site hosting the malware was shut down. When a user clicks on the link, their computer instantly downloads and launches the malware.

The worm also attempts to spread from computer to computer over local networks. So, disable network sharing and/or disconnect infected computers from the local network and Internet and block outbound traffic to the domains/ IP addresses contained in the malicious e-mail to prevent users connecting to distribution sites to download.

Stinger utility is used to detect and remove this threat. Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system.

Adobe warns over unpatched PDF peril

Hackers are making use of critical, unpatched vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader, Acrobat and Flash Player.

These vulnerabilities are platform independent and can affect users of Adobe products regardless of whether they run Windows, Mac or Linux systems, Adobe warns.

The software developer reckons that Adobe Reader and Acrobat version 8.x are not vulnerable, but users of the newer version 9.0 of the software are at risk. Adobe has published a workaround involving the deletion of a library file connected with processing Flash content in PDF files pending the development of a more comprehensive fix.

Adobe is yet to publish a timetable of when patches will become available. Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2 and earlier versions are vulnerable to the bug. Users of Flash Player 10.1 Release Candidate may be in the clear but that's uncertain, as an advisory from Adobe explains.

The bugs are the latest in a series of security pratfalls to befall Adobe software, joint favorite with Microsoft's browser and programs as the main targets of hacker attacks. The latest flaw can be blamed on the support of exotic files and formats within PDF files, a problem that has cropped up in the past.

Yesterday my brother in law came to me with his laptop complaining that his computer is not booting because the “system” file is missing. He was totally weird with the situation as a presentation for one of his project is due by next Monday and it matters everything to him right now as he have devoted last 7 months trying to grab that.

Finally after a half an hour tooling with his system the problem got fixed and he was the happy fellow. But then I thought why not blog something regarding System32 error right here on my blog today.

What is a System32?

The “system” file is one of many that is stored in windows/system32/config folder and it tells Windows XP how to start your computer and who to log in at startup. If this file is missing, your computer will not boot and you will see an error on a black screen stating: “Windows/System32/Config/System file missing or corrupt.”

There are two scenarios where this can happen. In the first scenario, the system file is simply corrupt or missing and needs to be replaced with Windows XP’s backup copy.

Recovering System32?

The first step in recovering from this problem is to boot into the Recovery Console and replace the missing or damaged system file with a backup copy. To do this, you will need an original Windows XP CD, or a recovery CD from your computer’s manufacturer, or a set of 6 Windows XP boot disks.

Once you have booted from your Windows XP CD or floppy disks, press the letter “R” at the first screen asking you for input. The computer will now ask you “Which Windows installation would you like to log onto.” Each profile is represented with a number. Press the number associated with your profile (usually the number 1) and presses enter. Now you will be prompted to ‘Type in the Administrator Password.” Enter your password and press enter.

After you enter your password you should be at a prompt that reads “C:/windows”. Type the commands below to navigate to your Windows/System32/Config directory and replace the appropriate file:

cd system32
cd config
ren system system.old
cd ..
cd ..
cd repair
copy system c:\windows\system32\config

You should now see a message stating that the file was copied successfully. Reboot your computer and you are done with your System32 Fix.

That BIOS control doesn’t need to be feared, and can actually be used to significantly improve your computer experience as well as quickly ameliorate problems that your local technician would charge a couple of hundred bucks to fix.

The BIOS Settings, also known as the Setup Utility, is configuration software that sets the options held in the PC’s CMOS to instruct all of the computer’s subsystems to play nice together. In order to access this software, you need to press either the F1 or Delete key on most computers. Check the swift-passing BIOS screen and it will likely tell you which key to use at the bottom left.

Once you’re in there, you will see instructions about how to navigate around the screen, usually by using Page Up, Page Down and some of those other “legacy” keys that you’ve often wondered why the heck they exist at all. Now you have access to all sorts of functions. Some can be experimented with to see if you like what they do. Some will screw up your PC bigtime and put a big wad of your hard earned money in the wallet of the local geek squadder. Here is a short guide to the major functions: the ones to play with and the ones to leave alone. If you start messing around with BIOS options you don’t understand please remember that you’ve been warned!

Boot Sequence: This is the order that the computer will use its peripherals to boot itself up. You can save some boot seconds in both XP and Vista by setting your C: drive (where your Operating System resides) as your first choice. This function is very handy if you’d like to temporarily set a USB key or external HD, or even your CD-DVD drive as the source of the boot. This way you could have a dozen keys on your desk, each one loaded with a different flavor of Linux and Windows and boot into whatever OS you felt like at the time. If that’s what turns your crank!

Date & Time: Changes the Date and Time. Whoopee. You can do the same thing by right clicking on the time on your Windows taskbar.

Diskette Drives: Most PCs no longer have floppies so forget this.

Hard Disk Priority: The Primary or Channel 1 Master should be your C: drive with your Operating System. However, for various reasons, you may have different operating systems on different hard drives or partitions. This is where you set the priority of what drives the computer should look at after C:.

Hard Drive Settings: Although you can modify all sorts of functions here, most of them will just scramble the data on your hard drives.

Hardware Monitor: There are various sensors on your motherboard which provide information on operating temperature, voltage supply and other operational data. Keep in mind that BIOS temperature sensors are famously inaccurate, and the only real way to measure if your CPU is overheating is by using an accurate temperature probe while the PC is under load. Either that or by waiting for the big puff of smoke to billow from the case. If you’re really a freak about what temp your processor is running at and want a constant readout on your Windows taskbar, download SpeedFan written by my old friend Alfredo. We I-ties stick together.

Memory Settings: You can change the latency settings here but that is primarily of interest to Overclockers who are on the way to frying their systems anyway, so avoid this.

NumLock Status: What a pain. This is one of those pointless legacy features that made sense in 1973 but not since. Of course you want your numeric keypad to work.

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed

To Access the Windows startup follow these steps:
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Click on Performance Information and Tools.

Boot defrag speeds up the startup process by placing the boot files next to each other. Some users may have this enabled already by default, but some have also noted that this is not the case after they had upgraded Windows. 1. Go to "Start–>Run", type "regedit" in the box and hit enter.

2. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction”

3. Select "Enable" from the list on the right.

4. Right on it and select "Modify".

5. Change the value to "Y" to enable and "N" to disable.

6. Reboot your computer.

1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\

2. From the Start menu, select "Run…" & type "gpedit.msc".

3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.

4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".

5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.

6. From the Start menu, select "Run…" & type "devmgmt.msc".

7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"

8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".

9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device or 1 that doesn’t have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".

10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.

11. Reboot your computer and you can see the difference

Google sees new browser displacing desktop software

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (Reuters) - Google Inc is challenging Microsoft Corp with its own Web browser that lets users run many applications that once worked only when installed on local PCs, executives said on Tuesday.

Google introduced a public trial version of its new browser software, Chrome, which is designed to handle not just text and graphics, but more complex computer support programs.

Chrome, available in 43 languages in 100 countries at www.google.com/chrome, has been designed to download software and Web pages faster than existing browsers. It even allows users to keep working when one of its windows crashes.

This represents Google's long-anticipated head-on attack on Microsoft and its Internet Explorer, which has three-quarters of the Web-browsing market. Google has backed Mozilla Corp's Firefox browser, which holds about 18 percent of the market.

Google engineers and executives call Chrome a "fresh take on the browser," a 15-year-old technology that is supplanting 25-year-old desktop software as the basic way users interact with computers.

"You actually spend more time in your browser than you do in your car," said Brian Rakowski, group product manager for Google's browser project.

Chrome was seen by analysts as partly a defensive move due to Google's fear that the recently upgraded Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) could be used to lock out Google. Google's core business of Web search and related advertising depends on browsers.

A Microsoft executive said IE 8 gives users control over how and where they navigate, improves their day-to-day browsing experience, and keeps people safe from new security threats. "Microsoft understands that Web browsing is crucially important for hundreds of millions of people, which is why we invest in Internet Explorer so heavily," Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer, said in a statement.

CHALLENGE TO MICROSOFT WINDOWS ?

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said Chrome was designed to address the shift to using software from within a Web browser rather than as locally installed computer applications running inside Microsoft Windows or some other operating system.

"I think operating systems are kind of an old way to think of the world," Brin told a group of reporters after the news conference at Google's Mountain View, California headquarters. "They have become kind of bulky, they have to do lots and lots of different (legacy) things."

Google believes any task done in a standalone desktop computer application can be delivered via the Web and Chrome is its bet that software applications can be run via a browser.

"We (Web users) want a very lightweight, fast engine for running applications," Brin said.

"The kind of things you want to have running standalone (on a computer) are shrinking," he said, adding that he still edits photos on his computer rather than using a Web program.

GOOGLE BORROWS FROM APPLE, FIREFOX

Chrome borrows liberally from other browsers running open-source software code, including Apple Inc and Firefox, and company officials said they planned to fully share Chrome code with other developers. "We have borrowed good ideas from others," Google Vice President of Product Management Sindar Pichai said. "Our goal here was to bring our point of view, but do it in a very open way."

Because Chrome relies on Apple's open-source WebKit software for rendering Web pages, it can run any application that runs on Apple's Safari Web browser, Pichai said.

"If you are a webmaster, and your site works in Apple Safari then it will work very well in Google Chrome," he said.

Greg Sterling, a Web analyst with Sterling Market Intelligence, said Google's entry into the browser market has echoes of the bruising "browser wars" of the late 1990s, when Microsoft crushed Web pioneer Netscape Communications.

But while the competition between Microsoft and Google is likely to produce many improvements for consumers, the likely fallout from the battle will be other browser makers that have only recently begun to pry market share away from Microsoft.

Sterling said Firefox could become a victim of "friendly fire" from Google as many of its users are the same early adopters who are most likely to switch and try a new browser.

"Firefox has softened up and paved the way for Google. Without Firefox, Chrome would not be possible," Sterling said.

Brin said Google planned to continue to work closely with Mozilla, whose primary financial backing has come from Google in recent years. He said he hoped to see future versions of Chrome and Firefox become more unified over time.

Chrome organizes information into tabbed pages. Web programs can be launched in their own dedicated windows.Among Chrome's features is a special privacy mode that lets users create an "incognito" window where "nothing that occurs in that window is ever logged on your computer," according to a Google promotional guide.

1) Clean out the case – Especially when you have pets, you may find lots of non-electronic things dwelling inside your PC’s console. Clean it out; all that fuzz and dust helps trap heat, especially when it clogs the PC’s fan and air vents. But do take care: unplug your PC before opening the case. Then use a vacuum or can of air to blast away years of crud.

2) Clean up the digital detritus – As with cleaning out the inside of the remote computer support case, you’ll want to clean up the digital leftovers on your remote computer’s hard drive. The Disk Cleanup tool that comes with Windows is ideal for this. For your own stuff, you should go through the things you’ve saved to disk and ensure that there aren’t things lurking there taking up space that you no longer need. If so, delete ‘em!

Unemployment among computer-related jobs hovers near historic lows as the U.S. information technology workforce tops 4 million for the first time.

The size of the IT workforce in the United States has topped 4 million workers for the first time last quarter, according to CIO Insight’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. And the number of employed IT pros reached 3,956,000 in the second quarter of 2008, also a record high.

The IT unemployment rate inched up one-tenth of a percentage point last quarter to 2.3 percent, but still hovers near historic lows. That’s in contrast to overall unemployment, which last quarter stood at 4.7 percent, more than double the IT jobless rate. (In June, overall unemployment stood at 5.5 percent for the second consecutive month, after shedding 62,000 jobs that month. Comparable numbers aren’t available for computer-related occupations.

Why would IT employment remain robust as unemployment rises in most other job categories? IT performs a critical role in business productivity, and the efficiencies it brings are crucial for employers looking to trim costs—including payrolls—as fuel and related expenditures soar and the economy and dollar weakens. In addition, companies today cannot operate without functioning IT systems, so certain business technology skills cannot be eliminated if a company wants to remain competitive.

A year earlier, the IT unemployment rate stood at 2.1 percent, with 3,599,000 workers employed in IT and 77,000 jobless and looking for positions in the field, for an IT workforce size of 3,675,000.

With 4,050,000 managers, professionals and other staffers holding or seeking computer-related positions last quarter, the IT workforce has grown by 10.2 percent over the past four quarters.

Another sign of a strong IT economy: the number of workers employed by IT services firms rose by 56,100 this past year to 1,414,400, a 4.1 percent increase, according to last month’s BLS establishment survey of some 160,000 businesses and government agencies covering about 400,000 worksites. The active sample includes about one-third of all nonfarm payroll workers.

The increase in IT services employment reflects the continuing need by companies for outsourcers to manage corporate IT infrastructures as well as provide hard-to-find but needed skills to develop and support new applications and systems.

Not every person employed by IT services firms—officially labeled by the government as remote computer support systems design and related services—is an IT pro, but a majority are. A 2006 government report estimates that 53 percent of IT services firms' workers hold IT jobs such as programmers; software engineers; remote computer repair the preferred choice of customers, network systems and data communications analysts; or database, network and systems administrators. Another 3 percent are computer repair and IS managers. The remaining employees—44 percent of payrolls—encompass non-IT managers and administrative and operational support personnel, including those in finance, human resources and sales.

Besides the establishment survey, the government also queries 60,000 households to determine employment and unemployment in the U.S. For our analysis, we use a BLS quarterly report that aggregates the monthly reports and details employment in hundreds of occupation categories. The government tracks seven major computer-related job categories: Today Many firm needs more remote computer professionals to log on and systems analysts, remote computer programmers, computer software engineers, computer support specialists, database administrators, network and computer systems administrators and network systems and data communications specialists plus computer and information systems managers.

CIO Insight analyzes these eight occupation categories to determine current IT employment conditions. Because these IT professions comprises less than 3 percent of the overall workforce, and each occupation category’s size on its own would be statistically unreliable, CIO Insight aggregates the last four quarters to determine each quarter’s workforce, employment and unemployment levels. For example, we added BLS data from the last two quarters of 2007 and the first two quarters of 2008 then divided by four to determine second-quarter 2008 data. Statisticians and economists say aggregating four quarters worth of data makes them more statically reliable than just using one quarter’s worth of data.

The world is full of youngish people who know everything there is to know about computers and the Internet, right?

Wrong.

In fact, industry sources say there are shortages worldwide of the people who know how to make that entire blinking, beeping cyber-universe go.

All those high-tech jobs that went to India, Pakistan and so on? They were mostly low-level support jobs, according to more than one professor of Computer Help and Support science.

Today, just about every company has a Web presence, said Kelly Lewis, president of the nonprofit Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania.

"There are not enough skilled people in the world to do this kind of work," Lewis said.

In the greater Harrisburg area, Lewis said, the industry is short 500 to 1,000 technology professionals, with companies raiding one another for techs and engineers.

"It's an international competition for talent, the scientists, technologists, engineers and project leaders," he said. "The demand will only get greater."

GeoDecisions Inc., a division of Gannett Fleming Inc. in East Pennsboro Twp., has had such a tough time finding qualified Web developers that the company helped Harrisburg University of Science and Technology create a curriculum to meet this specialized need, said Eric Darr, university provost.

GeoDecisions has hired three of the university's 20 graduates in the last two years. Five GeoDecisions employees teach at the school, Darr said.

Bob Scaer, president of GeoDecisions, said the motivation behind the company's commitment to the university is to add entry-level high-tech workers to the region. The company must still rely heavily on recruiters to scour the country and find workers who possess the advanced skills that GeoDecisions needs.

"We struggle to find these people," he said.

GeoDecisions isn't the only company that has come to Harrisburg University with a need for more talent, Darr said. Smart & Associates, a regional technology consulting firm, created two internships for Harrisburg University students just to support a contract Smart has to develop a Web portal for the state Department of Education.

Part of the looming problem in the networking field is that many of its earlier experts are retiring.

"The real challenge in the midstate is that 30 percent of the work force right now at all the Department of Defense facilities in our area is eligible for retirement," Lewis said.

Employers are desperate for workers in the networking field, said Kenneth Yarnall, a professor of math and remote computer support science at Lebanon Valley College. Reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that there will be tremendous growth in the next decade for jobs in the computer support science and math industry.

Despite the need, the number of students majoring in computer science has not kept pace.

David Hutchens, chairman of Millersville University's introduced new computer support automation utility software for science department, said enrollments have dropped in the past seven years, leveling off in the past two to three.

"We have half as many incoming students as we had in 2001," he said.

At Shippensburg, Carol Wellington, chairwoman of the computer science department, said it's a national trend that fewer students are enrolling in computer science programs.

At Lebanon Valley College, Michael Fry, a math professor who also teaches computer support science courses, believes the decline in students has stabilized.

"There is more demand for our students than there are students," he said.

But why the ups and downs?

"I think there is a misconception in the general population that there are no jobs to be had in computer science because they're all being shipped overseas," said Lewis.

"That's not true. There are more people working in the field than in 2001, and the job market seems very strong," he said.

Some companies, like California-based Cisco Systems, have created partnerships with government and non-government organizations, schools and industry designed to teach students how to build and maintain computer networks.

Cisco's Networking Academy is now in its 11th year, said Gene Longo, who manages the program. Pennsylvania was one of the first states where the Cisco program caught on, and Carlisle was one of the first districts to adopt it, Longo said.

The 90 or so academies in schools across Pennsylvania have put 11,000 students through the Cisco program, including Jon Strine, 24, systems engineer at The Patriot-News. Strine went through four semesters of the academy at Carlisle High School, graduating in 2000.

"For me, it was the first entry into data networking at a deeper level," he said. "I fell in love with data networking. It opened up a lot of doors."

Abner Vargas, 22, came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic when he was 11. He just graduated from Harrisburg University and has gone to work for Highmark, for whom he interned while he was working toward his computer science certification.

"I am working on Highmark's legacy modernization program, which means basically that I am helping to modernize their system, and automating some of the processes," Vargas said.

He said there is clearly a shortage of people trained in the computer sciences and technology.

"We have some contractors from other countries working here now, because there aren't enough trained people over here to do everything they need done," he said.

He added that bringing engineers and other technical people from overseas to work is expensive, time-consuming and requires whole forests of paper work.

"They would much rather have people from here. But there has been a real shortage in the past few years," Vargas said.

According to figures provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, a software engineer in the commonwealth can earn between $55,000 and $96,000 annually.

A computer support specialist can make between $28,000 and $48,000, and a network administrator from $41,000 to $78,000.

The industry has been working for some time to boost interest in students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses network professionals need. But Hutchens said there is no easy answer as to how to get that done.

Hutchens said incoming students could use a better math background in high school. He said his department even visits middle schools to spur interest among students. At the college, he tells students there are jobs everywhere.

At Shippensburg, Wellington said, there are usually 25 to 50 graduating with a degree in computer science.

"Everyone who graduated who wanted a job had a job," she said, with many in the midstate. "Students need to know computer science is fun."

It's not Online vista technical services: Windows Server 2008 gets nod from IT

It may look like Windows Online vista technical services . It shares the same code base as Windows Vista Support and Help Services. It even rolls in Vista's first Service Pack. But in terms of customer adoption plans, Windows Server 2008 is no online vista technical services.

A new Computerworld survey shows that 63% of the 403 respondents plan to adopt Microsoft's new server operating system. (You can read This contrasts with the intention of some IT organizations to skip Vista entirely and move directly to Windows 7 on the desktop. According to an of 372 IT professionals conducted by Sanford C. Bernstein in May, companies expect just 26% of their PCs to be running Vista by the beginning of 2011, down from an estimate of nearly 68% of computers based on a similar survey a year ago. "I haven't seen any shadow of Vista being cast over Windows Server 2008," says John Enck, analyst at Gartner Inc. Most industry watchers, in fact, agree that deployment is not a matter of if, but when and where.

IT executives say that for the most part, Windows Server 2008's many new features won't compel them to change their normal refresh schedules to adopt it right away. "It's just an evolutionary step from Server 2003," says Rick Redman, senior IT analyst for the city of Amarillo, Texas.

Jim Thomas, director of IT operations at window manufacturer Pella Corp. in Pella, Iowa, says Microsoft's new virtualization hypervisor, is interesting. But other than that, he says, there's "not a whole lot" that he finds compelling. And Hyper-V is and immature to warrant rushing ahead to convert his 425 Windows servers, he adds. Overall, however, IT decision-makers give the operating system a qualified thumbs up and plan to move to it as part of the normal server refresh cycle, which typically ranges from three to five years. Some customers, for instance, phase in new servers by replacing one-third of their machines each year; others replace all of their servers at once. One can get excellent exchange server support from many reputed companies like microsoft, iyogi etc.

"We're coming at it much more from a normal rollout of an operating system," says Bob Yale, IT principal at The Vanguard Group Inc. in Valley Forge, Pa. Vanguard has about 1,200 Windows servers, most of which are running Windows Server 2003.

Overall, 59% of Computerworld 's survey respondents who said they plan to adopt Windows Server 2008 (WS '08) expect to get started within the next 12 months. More than half -- 55% -- expect to complete the transition within two years. The highest level of interest came from respondents at midsize organizations with 100 to 1,000 employees; 69% of them said they expect to get started within the next 12 months.

Selective service

In most cases, the early adopters are deploying WS '08 selectively in a bid to leverage specific new features in the operating system. While more than half of respondents in our survey said they will follow the usual upgrade schedule, about one in four said they will accelerate adoption for some applications. One in three respondents said that their organizations have a business need for a new feature in WS '08.

Mike Moore, IT principal at Vanguard, says his company has implemented a few WS '08 machines where the new features filled a business need. For instance, Vanguard has servers in place that leverage WS '08's new (NAP) features. "We'd like to extend that further with the more-granular policy servers that Windows Server 2008 provides," he says. But he doesn't expect to get serious about WS '08 rollouts until sometime in 2009. Neither does the city of Amarillo's Redman, who says he'd like to see a base of documentation and best practices before moving forward. "The biggest problem is getting useful Online vista technical services articles out of Microsoft that don't have a lot of marketing hype," he says.

But Ward Ralston, senior windows vista support services product manager for Windows Server 2008, argues that plenty of resources exist today. He points to the as examples. Redman expects to begin migrating to WS '08 within a year. For now, however, he'll stick with Server 2003 when the need for new servers arises. While it's not hard to install the new operating system, it's quite a bit of work to load the fixes and patches and deal with Online vista technical services support, he says. "If this one is working, why break it? We have 1,500 other things to do," he notes.

Early adopter Pacific Coast Cos. in Cordova, Calif., upgraded three server-based applications to WS '08 while participating in Microsoft's beta program. The applications, which include an estimator, a design application and a quality-control application, are all hosted using Terminal Online vista technical services and have been stable. Because they're critical, however, administrators perform a preventive reboot every month, just to be safe, says enterprise architect Matt Okuma. But he'd like to see the operating system season a bit before he migrates other applications. "Would I run an SAP portal on Server 2008 right now? Probably not," he says.

Like Vanguard, Pacific Coast plans to selectively deploy WS '08 as a replacement for third-party products. "We don't want a fancy environment for network access protection. We just want to know when someone unauthorized has accessed our network," Okuma says. His organization has also deployed Windows Server 2008's Terminal Online vista technical services , with its ability to publish applications, as a replacement for his Citrix environment, which was hosted by a third party. The new setup saves on licensing and maintenance costs and performs better. "We've offloaded the cost and maintenance of Citrix. That's why we went to Server 2008," Okuma says. It was, he adds, a "no-brainer."

Broader deployments at Pacific Coast will likely start with Active Directory servers, but that's at least a year away. "We'll stick with Server 2003 in the interim," Okuma says.

Virtual possibilities
is probably the most talked about new feature in Server 2008. But with the hypervisor and management tools just emerging from beta, most organizations don't take Hyper-V seriously -- yet. "It's on our watch list, but not on the critical path to our virtualization strategy by any means," says Vanguard's Yale.
"Down the road, I think Microsoft will crush VMware, but they're far behind VMware at this point," says Okuma. He currently has 150 Windows servers, most of which are running virtualized Windows Server 2003 sessions on VMware products. Many of those virtual servers are "Tier 0" virtual machines, where server recovery would be time-consuming. "I would not move them to Hyper-V at this point," Okuma says.

"In 12 to 18 months, [Microsoft] will give VMware a run for their money," says Gartner's Enck. He thinks Microsoft will push Hyper-V into the enterprise through aggressive licensing practices. "It is very good at using the as a tool to shift the base," he says.

VMware also faces a competitive challenge from Microsoft for IT organizations that use more than one hypervisor. The of System Center Virtual Machine Manager, which offers some of the same tools found in VMware's VirtualCenter, will support not only Hyper-V but VMware ESX hypervisors as well when it's released later this year. And support for Xen is planned, according to Microsoft. VMware supports only its own hypervisor.

Right now, management tools are the No. 1 issue when it comes to virtualization, according to IDC. Microsoft's offering is not nearly as complete as VMware's, says Amarillo's Redman. But as it matures and the number of virtual machines under management continues to grow, System Center Virtual Machine Manager's flexibility will be increasingly attractive.

For now, however, most large companies are already committed to VMware. While 62% of large-company respondents in the Computerworld survey said they were using VMware for virtualization, nearly half (45%) of small companies and 29% of midsize companies said they weren't using virtualization at all yet. Gartner estimates that the installed base for virtualization as a percentage of all servers in use is still somewhere around 10%. That leaves plenty of room for Microsoft to move in.

"We think Microsoft will get big chunks of the market" and push out competitors, Enck says, leaving the market with two dominant players: VMware and Microsoft.

Scott Zimmerman, CIO at CenterPoint Properties in Oakbrook, Ill., is using VMware to host six of the real estate development and management company's 25 Windows servers. Zimmerman says he's very interested possibly using Hyper-V. "Is it a viable substitute? We'll want to find out," he says.

The city of Amarillo, with 100 to 150 Windows servers, is just starting to look at virtualization, Redman says. He's interested in Hyper-V but wants to see a broad community of support surrounding it before he'll consider deployment. "With VMware, a lot of people can help," he says.

Chad Mawson, IT manager at law firm Woods & Aitken LLP in Lincoln, Neb. agrees. He says he's seen "bits and pieces" of information on Microsoft's but notes that "there doesn't seem to be any real community base."

Overcoming VMware's entrenched position and customer loyalty won't be easy. "We're probably going to stick with VMware unless there's a huge price differential," Mawson says, noting that his ESX virtual machines are "incredibly stable." VMware isn't cheap, but that doesn't keep him up at night. "We get a good value for our money," he says.

Better living through Active Directory
and group policy are another area where users say even incremental improvements are welcome. Overall, however, the improvements in Active Directory, such as the new read-only domain controller and improved logging for change events, are minimal, says Gartner's Enck. More important improvements, including better integration with Lightweight Directory Online vista technical services or non-Windows Kerberos implementations, aren't there yet.
Microsoft's Ralston counters that WS '08 includes more than 1,800 group policy settings that used to require the creation of custom scripts. "We closed the loop on all of those group policy features that were missing," he says. Microsoft also rolled in tools from its Desktop Standard acquisition, now called Group Policy Preferences, to automate the creation of group policies.

Woods & Aitken deployed a single instance of WS '08 for an Active Directory domain controller in a remote office that needed a new server. Mawson says the system is working fine, but he acknowledges that the deployment was a gamble. "It's more of a test in active use," he says. The enhanced group-policy management features are a step up, and Mawson intends to take full advantage of those features. He'll begin moving to WS '08 immediately but will only migrate as servers come up for their regular replacement, he says.
found the new Active Directory features sufficient to upgrade some servers. "The improvements in the Active Directory Online vista technical services [and] fine-grained password policies are really compelling," says Michael Lebiedzinski, director of infrastructure for the company s Global Wealth Platform. "In the past, different password policies were a driver to separate domains," he says. While the ability to fine-tune password policies drove the firm's adoption of WS '08, enabling domain consolidation was a secondary benefit, he says.
Others say they like the improvements but are in no rush to upgrade servers. "We've had talks about upgrading our Active Directory, but what do we actually gain from it? The risk is higher to go to 2008 than to just stay with 2003 at this point," Okuma says.

Stripping down to the core
Server 2008 offers 19 role-based installations that strip down the operating system to only the components needed to perform a given function, such as DNS. "We removed everything that wasn't needed for those roles. No .Net Framework, no Media Player, not even a GUI," says Microsoft's Ralston.

Redman thinks that the Server Core roles such as Active Directory and DNS server configurations will be particularly useful for remote sites. "A stripped-down operating system has less of a footprint for viruses, etc.," he says. Still, he's not going to put them in ahead of the normal refresh cycle.

Some of the roles fall in areas where Linux has been a popular alternative, but Gartner's Enck doesn't think WS '08 is a Linux-killer. Server Core is limited to a few specific roles, making it less flexible than Linux, he says. And while Server Core versions are easier to administer and are more secure than full-blown Windows Server installations because of the smaller footprint, there's no clear cost benefit to moving off of Linux. However, Server Core could blunt further advances by Linux into the enterprise for those role-based Online vista technical services it does support, he says.
Internet Information Server
part of WS '08, offers more security features. Like the rest of the operating system, IIS has been componentized. There are more than 40 different pieces that can be installed to build a Web server, says Ralston. IIS 7 includes many security improvements, he adds. For example, a remote procedure call can't write to the registry or file system anymore because the security token for the account it runs under no longer has those privileges baked in.
IIS 7 is the most interesting part of Server 2008 for Zimmerman at CenterPoint Properties. "All of our applications are Web-based, so we like to keep current," he says. He points to improvements in streaming-media capabilities and in how IIS interacts with Active Server Pages, as well as the ease with which WS '08 can propagate configuration updates to Web server farms, as compelling reasons to upgrade.

It's not, however, compelling enough to make an IIS migration a top priority. "We don't have the time and project plan to focus on Windows Server 2008 right now," Zimmerman says. For now, he will continue to deploy Windows Server 2003 as needed and gradually begin upgrading later this year, starting with noncritical servers, he says.

SP2: The new SP1
While it's typical for organizations to wait for the first service pack before deploying a new operating system from Microsoft, in Computerworld 's survey, just over a third of respondents said they'd wait for the next service pack before deploying WS '08. Small companies were the most cautious.

One reason may be the perception that WS '08 has already had its first service pack, since Microsoft rolled up Vista's SP1 into the initial release of the product. Indeed, Microsoft has announced that the first true service pack for WS '08 will be labeled "SP2."

But while Vista and WS '08 do share a common code base, the server OS is far more modular and has many features that aren't part of Vista. At best, Vista SP1 was a partial service pack for WS '08. "SP2 is the old SP1," says Vanguard's Moore. "I'm not convinced that they've fixed all of the quality issues. We'll wait until SP2." Vanguard will begin a gradual rollout only when SP2 finally ships, he says.

Pacific Coast's Okuma is also cautious. "Our organization will definitely wait" for SP2, he says.

But that's not stopping Mawson at Woods & Aitken. SP1 "was already integrated into Server 2008, so that didn't play into the decision for us," he says, adding that he has seen no crashes so far with his test server.

Zimmerman currently has WS '08 running on a test machine. "We like it," he says but notes that he'll wait for the next service pack. "We kind of hang out until [SP2 ships], unless there's some overwhelming argument that it's stable," he adds.

"Sometime after SP2 comes out, we will start to look at rolling through a refresh," says Moore. He expects to start sometime next year. The rollout will require six months of planning and 12 to 18 months to complete.

Perhaps the biggest reason why SP2 doesn't matter is that the update is likely to arrive before many organizations can initiate major deployments. Redman says SP2 is important but not a concern on his planning horizon: "By the time we get around to [deploying Windows Server], there usually is [a service pack]." The real bottleneck, he says, is evaluation and planning time. "It could take us six months to a year to finish looking at the features, play with them and see what it will buy us," he says.

When you're out of the office, 01 Communique's I'm InTouch 6.1 lets you access your computer from afar. With I'm InTouch 6.1 installed on a Windows XP or Vista host computer, you can access that host computer from any remote Windows computer support on the internet via a web browser.

Now you can take control of the host's desktop, view its attached webcams, access its files and print them to your local printer. There's an option to access the host in Stealth Mode, which is handy when you want to check up on people. One impressive feature is the ability to access the Outlook inbox on the host via a webmail-style interface, which is more responsive than using the full remote desktop.

You would be better off setting up webmail access to your email on the server, but I'm InTouch could be useful if your email provider doesn't provide remote access to your inbox.

New features in version 6.1 include audio support and multi-monitor configurations, letting you view all of the host's displays even if your remote computer support services has only one monitor. When you take control of a host you can choose to view its desktop or a Windows Explorer-like view of the hard drive's contents. When you're viewing the desktop, a small drop-down menu lets you access features such as file transfers and switching to full-screen mode. I'm InTouch is also designed with hand-held devices in mind and is optimised for Pocket PC and Blackberry devices. A

long with remote access, it offers basic collaboration features such as chat and a whiteboard. Up to 10 remote users can access the same host simultaneously, which means you could use it for training sessions and online meetings - although if this is your primary requirement you might be better served by dedicated offerings from the likes of Citrix Online or Cisco's WebEx. One of I'm InTouch's drawbacks is that it is very Windows-centric. Not only are hosts restricted to running XP or Vista, but 01 Communique only supports remote users running Windows using ActiveX or Java via Internet Explorer or Firefox.

We managed to access files on our Windows XP machine from Safari and Firefox on our Leopard MacBook, and Safari on our iPhone but we couldn't view the host's desktop. I'm InTouch does the job but its biggest problem is that competitors such as LogMeIn and Citrix Online's GoToMyPC are more user friendly, more flexible and offer remote connections from more platforms. For example, unlike LogMeIn and GoToMyPC, I'm InTouch's web interface doesn't show you a list of all your host computers and their status (we're told I'm InTouch Premium will offer this, available in June). Nor does I'm InTouch's web interface make it easy to add new host computers.

Steve Duncan, East Carolina University director of military programs, was honored May 3 with the General William E. DePuy Award, presented by the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

The award is considered the most prestigious honor given by the U.S. Army Cadet Command, the parent organization of the Army ROTC program, and has been presented only to two other individuals.

The award recognizes an individual who has provided significant support to the local or national Army ROTC program.

Brig. Gen. Arnold N. Gordon-Bray, the deputy commanding general of Cadet Command, officiated at a ceremony that honored this year's graduates of both the Army and the Air Force ROTC programs at ECU. Also present at the event was Col. William T. Wiseman, the commander of the Fourth ROTC Brigade.

Gordon-Bray praised Duncan for his continuing efforts on behalf of the ROTC program at ECU. He noted that Duncan's previous service as the deputy commander of the U.S. Army Training Support Center and in other key governmental assignments also had significantly contributed to the success of the Army.

While a civilian employee of the federal government, Duncan earned the Superior Service Award, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service – the highest award presented to civilian employees of the Army's Remote technical support program recognized ECU's online master's of science program in Computer support Science and Technology Systems was named a "best buy" from an organization that evaluates online degree programs.

GetEducated.com, which serves as a clearinghouse to showcase and evaluate accredited online degrees, employs college experts to review each online program. In 2007, ECU's online MBA and education degrees ranked one and three, respectively.

ECU's master's program in computer support science ranked seventh out of 68 programs nationwide. Housed in the College of Technology and Computer Science, the program offers four master's of science degrees: computer science; computer networking management; data communications technology; and information security.

Program seeks to help veterans

A program to assist mental health professionals working with returning war veterans will be offered May 29-30.

The May 29 session will focus on mental health of service members returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will be held at 5:45-9 p.m. at the Edwin W. Monroe Eastern AHEC Conference Center, 2000 Venture Tower Drive, Greenville. The program is aimed at primary care physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

The May 30 workshop will help mental health professionals apply clinical skills to their work with these veterans and their families.It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Pitt County Agricultural Center, 403 Government Circle, Greenville.

Speakers for these events include Dr. Harold Kudler, mental health coordinator for Veterans Affairs medical centers in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia; Dr. Vince Arnold, retired Navy and director of the Deployment Health Center at Camp Lejeune; Dr. Kristy Straits-Troster, clinical psychologist with Veterans Affairs.

The events are sponsored by the Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Southeast Area Health Education Center, the N.C. Citizen Soldier Support Program, the Veterans Administration and others.

Engineering grads donate

ECU's first graduating class of 22 engineers donated $1,500 to ECU's Engineering Foundation. The announcement was made at the College of Technology and Computer Science Recognition Ceremony on May 10.

"This generous and forward-thinking gift is the start of alumni involvement in the engineering program," said Paul Kauffmann, chairman of the engineering department. "Our first graduates have demonstrated their commitment to enhancing engineering access by this donation which will focus on scholarships and financial support for future students."

Business sets scholarship mark

The College of Business recognized 96 undergraduate and graduate students with scholarships at an awards banquet on April 29.

The scholarships totaled $120,000 for the 2008-09 academic year – almost doubling last year's sum of $65,000.

"These scholarships reflect the generosity of our alumni, faculty, and friends – they have shared their success so that others can succeed," said Frederick Niswander, dean of the College of Business,

Trujillo named chair of OT

Leonard G. Trujillo has been named chairman of the Department of Occupational Therapy in the College of Allied Health Sciences.

Trujillo, who holds a doctoral degree, has been an occupational therapist for 30 years with the majority of his clinical experience in the U.S. Air Force. He was the only USAF officer to have held the position of program director for the Tri Service OT Assistant Program at the Army's Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Prior to joining ECU, he was an associate professor and associate dean at the School of Occupational Therapy at Texas Woman's University in Dallas.

Last week, we talked about using the Internet as a tool to make your life more eco-friendly (if you missed that column, it's online at statesman.com/lifeguide). But what about the power all that computer use takes up? According to PC maker Lenovo, the average American is on the Internet about 33 hours per week. And even when we're not online, we often leave our computers on — burning up more power.

With Earth Day coming up on Tuesday, here are ideas for cutting that power total.

Buying electronics

Get a list of energy-efficient computers at energystar.gov. "Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping the consumer save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices," says Peter Mann, CEO of Austin-based Alen Corp., which makes Energy Star-rated indoor air-quality products.

The book "MySpace/Our Planet," from the popular social networking site, also suggests looking for the EPEAT certification (epeat.net), which evaluates computers based on both how they run and how they were manufactured.

The Consumer Electronics Association's Web site mygreenelectronics.org features an energy calculator for home electronics products and a database of energy-efficient products.

Saving power

In a survey commissioned by Austin-based tech support service site support.com, more than half of computer users almost never turn their computers off or turn them off only when they go to bed. A video on the company's Web site talks about "greening" your PC and the free power-management consultation Support.com offers.

Set your computer to go into sleep mode if you'll be away more than 10 minutes, says Gillan Taddune, the chief environmental officer at Austin-based BeGreen (begreennow.com), the carbon offset arm of Green Mountain Energy. Turning your monitor off or putting it in sleep mode can save you about $50 a year, according to "MySpace/Our Planet."

Also, don't forget about the energy-saving settings on your computer, according to Lenovo or do you know how much greener is your PC ? If not call the technicians from the company like iyogi, microsoft, norton etc they will guide you. Belkin (belkin.com/conserve) makes a surge protector that keeps power flowing to a couple of outlets, for things like a DVR that need to stay on. Green tips site idealbite.com recommends Smart Strip power strips, which turn themselves off.

A Youth Internet Survey reveals that 1 in 5 children encounter a sexual approach or solicitation online, and according to a study by the Pew Internet& American Life Project, 89% of solicitations occur in chat rooms or through instant messaging.

"Our plan is to provide simple and non-intrusive products that will work for families. We know that technology alone will not keep children safe on the Internet at all times. Education and the ability to offer flexible products that allow users to determine the degree of protection and the degree of individual control they want is clearly what the market is demanding. CyberPatrol meets that demand," added Bales.

Websense acquired the CyberPatrol product through the acquisition of the UK-based company SurfControl, which was completed in October 2007. CyberPatrol will continue to computer support existing customers of the CyberPatrol product, said Bales, including small and medium sized businesses, libraries and educational users that use CyberPatrol to manage their users' Internet access to offensive and undesirable Web sites.

"Divesting the CyberPatrol product line is another milestone in the execution of our acquisition of SurfControl," said Doug Wride, president, Websense. There have been 3,733,200 job openings nationally advertised online in March, a 0.6 percent decline from the March 2007 level, according to The Conference Board.

The decline is the first over-the-year decline and reflects a slowing in annual growth in 42 states, of which 14 states were negative, the organization says.

In March, there were 2.4 advertised vacancies posted online for every 100 persons in the labor force, down from a high of 2.9 in April 2007.

Online advertised vacancies in California, the state with the largest labor force in the nation, totaled 512,000 in March. The ad volume in California dropped 118,000 or 19 percent below the March 2007 level.

“The softening in advertised vacancies evident over the last few months spread to more states in March and, for the first time, annual growth turned negative for the nation as a whole,” says Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board. “It would not be surprising to see a third straight month of job losses when employment data are released later this week as well as continued weakness in the months ahead.

Mr. Levanon says the weak demand for labor and a soft employment market help explain the significant decline in the Consumer Confidence Index released last week, which dropped to 64.5, its lowest level since 2003.

In March, 2,542,500 of the 3,733,200 unduplicated online advertised vacancies were new ads that did not appear in February, while the rest were reposted ads from the previous month. In March, the number of total online advertised vacancies declined 5 percent and new ads dropped 8 percent from February, reflecting the fact that there were fewer days during the reference period, as well as the continued slowing in the labor market.

States where labor demand continues to be high include Alaska, Nevada and Delaware. Alaska posted 4.65 online advertised vacancies for every 100 persons in the state labor force, the highest rate in the nation. Alaska has held the number one position for seven months in a row. Nevada (4.38) and Delaware (4.26) were close behind in the number of advertised vacancies when adjusted for the size of the state labor force. Half of the top 10 states with the highest ads rate are west of the Mississippi and in addition to Alaska and Nevada include Arizona (4.17), Colorado (4.04) and Washington (3.73). The other half of the top ten are along the Eastern seaboard.

“Although one cannot infer that the occupation or geographic location of unemployed persons matches the occupation or geographic location of the vacancies, looking at the number of unemployed in relation to the number of advertised vacancies provides an indication of available job opportunities for the unemployed,” says Mr. Levanon.

Healthcare still leads occupations in highest demand.

“Many jobs in high demand are also, on average, among the highest paying occupations,” says Mr. Levanon. Healthcare practitioners (260,400) and management (228,900) are the two occupations with the most number of ads posted online, the report says.

According to the latest federal hourly wage data, wages average about $30 for healthcare practitioners and above $44 an hour for management.

Also in high demand are occupations in computer and mathematical (203,900), business and financial operations (197,400) and office and administrative support (194,400).

The Conference Board survey measures the number of new, first-time online jobs and jobs reposted from the previous month on more than 1,200 major Internet job boards and smaller job boards that serve niche markets and smaller geographic areas.

Microsoft offers free online computer support for Vista SP1 installs

Vista users encountering problems when they upgrade to Service Pack 1 can breathe easier: the company is giving away free support for those installing the service pack.

The transition to the service pack , some of whom have seen their computer fall into endless reboot cycles and struggled with broken applications after installing the upgrade.

Normally, only Windows Vista users who bought the retail product would be eligible for free support but, for SP1 installation, even users with an original-equipment-manufacturer copy of Vista on their computer can get Microsoft's help, according to the official vista blog

"We are offering free-of-charge support to anyone who is having issues installing Windows Vista SP1," Microsoft blogger Brandon Le Blanc said.

Unlimited installation and compatibility support is available at no charge until March 18, 2009, according to the Microsoft Service Pack 1 support site.

There are three options available under the free support plan for U.S. users: e-mail support, which will be answered within one business day; online chat, which has a current waiting time of around 40 minutes; and call, available only for users who have a software-assurance agreement, professional contract, TechNet subscription, or MSDN subscription, or for those who come under the Microsoft Partner Program.

Support will be handled on a case-by-case basis, a Microsoft spokesperson said, and the user will always be advised if costs are involved.

Whether enterprise customers will also receive support without cost will depend on their agreement, the spokesperson added.
